The 2018 season for CT Sweetwater Bass proved to be one of the club’s best yet!

Marc Lampkin, the club’s longest standing member and current president took home the first tournament of the year at Lake Lillinonah with an impressive 13 plus pound bag! There were 3 double digit bags along with a 5 plus pound smallie caught by Mike Iovino. This smallie turned out to be the club’s smallie lunker for 2018! The second tournament of the year at Lake Zoar was won by new member, Mickey Curran. He’s the first non-boater to win since Nate Casarella won back in 2013!

Our third stop at the Connecticut River was mostly an outgoing tide tournament. Nate Casarella won with an eleven plus pound bag of largemouth. The next stop at Highland Lake turned out to be Dan Luman’s first club victory after he bagged 12.09 lbs of largemouth bass. Sweetwater would have had 5 double digit bags if it weren’t for 1 fish management penalty. At our fifth stop of the year, Sweetwater’s first trip to Candlewood was taken by Mike Iovino with an impressive 16 plus pound bag. Five more double digit bags were caught by the club at this tournament! Jeremiah Fedorich caught a 5.37 lb largemouth, which ended up being the club’s lunker largie for 2018!

The club headed right back to Candlewood for the next stop due to a scheduling conflict. Nate Casarella took his second victory of the season bringing a 16 plus pound bag to the scales. A record 6 double digit bags were weighed in by club members for this tournament! Our second to last stop of the year turned out to be a record-breaking tournament. Dan Luman brought in a 20 plus pound bag of fish to the scales at Amos Lake! Believe it or not, with all the big sticks CT Sweetwater has had over the years, this was our first 20 plus pound bag!

The Angler of the Year standings was a tight three-man race throughout most of the season between Mike Iovino, Dan Luman and Nate Casarella. All three at one point during the season held the lead. Dan was in first during the month of June, Mike was leader of the pack in July, and Nate held a slim lead in August. But, going into the final tournament on September 29th, Mike Iovino held a 6 point lead. Candlewood was the stop, and strong post-frontal conditions made this a very challenging final tournament! Mike Iovino was the only angler to catch a double digit bag bringing 10.93 lbs to the scales to take the victory and 2018 Angler of the Year! Dan Luman came in second in Angler of Year edging third place angler, Nate Casarella by 1 point.

After such an action-packed 2018 season, CT Sweetwater is ready for more in 2019! The season begins on April 27th; we will see you at Lake Lillinonah!
